Sara received her BFA in Sculpture from California State University Fullerton in 2017. After graduating, she participated in the Torpedo Factory Post-Grad Residency in Alexandria, Virgina. During this residency she further explored the boundaries of fiber as a medium in her art with the sculpture The Becoming. The residency culminated in a group show in which all Post-Grad residents from that year exhibited.
After completing the residency, she accepted a position as the 3D Studio Manager for the Art Department at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles. While working at LMU, she found joy in working with higher education students and helping foster their artistic practice. She also began her large scale work The Unrealized Wonder; a larger-than-life luxury of time sculpture that ultimately served as a reflection of the artists' growth throughout the 5 years post graduating.
In 2022 Sara accepted a Lab Assistant position for the Art & Architecture Department at Harold Washington College in Chicago. She continues to produce large-scale sculptures that utilize and/or combine fiber and cast elements.
Artist Statement
Cool and warm. Hard and soft. Stoic and vulnerable. Independent and connected. These contrasts are the focus of sculptor Sara Roberts’ exploration into the complexity and intangibility of intimate personal relationships.
With a specialty in mold-making, casting, and textiles, Sara uses materials that often juxtapose one another in texture, density, and color. Vivid, malleable, and intricately woven fabrics are often paired with blunt and rigid cast elements.
These contradictions within her work give rise to conflicting emotions and interpretations. Ultimately, Sara's work poses the question: What aspects of ourselves are unearthed and transformed when we examine our own interconnectedness?
